Chapter 6

Brandi winced as she moved her head. A sharp pain pierced the side of her temple.

“I slipped and fell,” she mumbled. Had she already told him that? Things around her were getting a bit unfocused, and her head swam dizzily. A wave of nausea came out of the blue.

She must have hit her head harder than she thought. A deer had jumped out of the bushes and ran across the creek. She hadn’t seen it until it was too late, but the animal startled her enough that she’d slipped on one of the many rocks along the creek and fallen hard.

Boone was right beside her. His image was a bit fuzzy, but the now-familiar odor gave him away. Brandi leaned against his arm. The warmth of his skin against her cheek brought an odd sense of comfort. His hand held her arm to steady her, but then his grip suddenly tightened. His fingers became tense.

“Boone?” Brandi blinked and slowly raised her head. The effort brought renewed pounding to her skull.

“Stay,” he said in a low tone. He let go of her and stood.

Brandi swayed and reached her hands out to balance herself as she sat on the ground. She was either going to be sick or pass out. Probably both, but hopefully not at the same time. She turned away from him just in time to lean over and expel her stomach contents. The action nearly split her head in half.

Behind her, voices became louder. They sounded threatening. Boone shouted something, and there seemed to be some kind of scuffle. Brandi wiped her hand across her mouth and glanced over her shoulder. Stars swirled before her eyes, obstructing her view. A second later, someone was beside her, holding her arm steady.

“Boone?” she croaked.

“Are you Brandi Simmons?” an unfamiliar voice beside her asked. The man sounded matter-of-fact and business-like.

“Yes.” Brandi blinked and looked up. The man’s face was slightly unfocused, so she blinked again. “Who are you?”

“Ranger Thomas Andrews. I’m with Search and Rescue.”

“Search and Rescue?” Brandi echoed. Behind her, more men talked. Walkie Talkies made beeping and static noises. Through all the commotion, Boone’s familiar voice cursed, demanding to be released.

“What’s going on?” Brandi bit back the pain in her head from all the unnatural sounds around her. They were closing in on her and making her head pound even more, and prevented her from any kind of coherent thought.

“We’re here to get you back safely to Jackson,” a different voice than the first man said. “We’re just going to assess your injuries. You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”

“Afraid? I’m not afraid. My head just hurts.”

Everything else became a blur. Several people fussed over her, taking her vitals, dabbing things against her head.

“Do you know your name?”

Brandi blinked to focus on the man asking the question. “Brandi Simmons.”

“Do you know where you are?”

Brandi squinted, looking up at trees and a glimpse of snow-covered mountains. “I’m in the Tetons, somewhere in the past.”

There was a momentary silence before the man continued his questioning.
